hello all, i am 24 and an avid otaku, and was wondering how i could find like minded friends who live close. i am not the most outgoing person hahaha i guess that goes with being such an anime crazy....but i like all things anime including drawing, watching, reading, playing andgoing to conventions.

i thought most of the people in the world are good, why is it so hard to find true friends?

You ask a question which is very complicated to answer if you want to fully understand, but maybe here are some fairly simple thoughts to get started with. I know or have known people in most countries of the world and have studied how humans work and have some conclusions.
I think most people are "good" (according to how one defines it - what I think is good, another may not). Good people do bad things. Bad people do an occasional good thing. People who mostly do bad things have severe psychological problems. People who do mostly good things have fewer such problems. So, let's understand all people are just people - most will do good and some will do bad things.
In order for civilization and society to exist, most people have inherited the evolutionary tendency for empathy and altruism (required for people to live together) and will, therefore have friends if they, firstly, will be a friend.
How do you define "true friends"? What do you expect them to be? How should they act? What can they expect of you and what is your behavior with them? How much of what you think about any or every thing should they agree with? Do you want to be able to trust them? Can they trust you? Can you be friends with someone just because of who they are rather than what they can or will do for you? (Those are not all the possible questions, just some to get you started on thinking about the issue you raise.)
If you are or become the type person people want to be friendly with, you will have friends. Understand that not everyone will want to be friends with you for reasons which may not have anything to do with you, for example, you may remind them of someone who mistreated them. But the better friend and human you are, the better your friends will be.
Just as your question implies, the important question is not how many friends you have, but the quality of those you and they have chosen to be true friends.
Remember that almost all the time almost all people will behave in ways which they think will be best for them. This is not always selfish or greedy, it is just that they are behaving according to what they think their rules for survival require. A pig can only be a pig, a snake only a snake, it takes thinking to be other than as we were born and trained.

Sometimes people change, but don't expect them to. And keep in mind that your job is to be the best human you can be. Your job is NOT to change someone else.
Humans learn by imitating and we teach others how to treat us. So, be a person others want to imitate (because they see you are mostly happy and live life well as a good human) and treat others the way they want to be treated (but don't violate your own rules for being happy and living life well).

Where to find moderately priced souvenirs for friends & family in Chicago?
I'll be staying at Hotel Monaco for a couple a days and want to pick up some nice souvenirs for my friends and family. Not really sure what I want to get them yet. I'm very open to suggestions of places to look. I have a feeling there are better places than the overpriced museums to find neat items.

Even though you want to avoid museums, you might want to check out the Chicago Historical Society, at 1601 N Clark St. Besides having good info on the city's history, their gift shop has a lot of Chicago gifts that are reasonably priced. If you forget someone, they also have a kiosk at the airport. You could also go up to Wrigley Field during a Cubs game and buy T-shirts or other Cubs gear. And Navy Pier on a sunny Chicago day is a fun place to stroll around, enjoy the views of the city from out on the water, and there are plenty of shops there that have a variety of gifts. I love both my moms very much and they are coming to my college soccer game tonight. A lot of parents are in town this weekend so my moms will be meeting them. My friends at school don't know and I'm kind of scared to tell them seeing as how i go to a very conservitive school.

I'll be staying at Hotel Monaco for a couple a days and want to pick up some nice souvenirs for my friends and family. Not really sure what I want to get them yet. as you get older? I really miss the large group of friends I had when i was younger. Now in my 30's I find that it's just not as easy.I think it also has to do with where you live. I've lived near Chicago for years now, but I grew up in Kentucky.I think southern people are just alot friendlier. Anyone else have this problem?

Nope .. i think it's got some thing to do with age thing .. because when we are Young .care free ..meet at certain meeting places ..ie clubs .disco.favorite cafeteria.out side cinemas ..no responsibility's .single .nothing attached ..that's what you do ..come 30 plus 85 % of the age group are fully committed ..no more hanging around ..that is why there is shortage of what you been use to..

Husband wants a divorce to go and find himself, but wants to stay friends???
I'm so lost on how to feel right now. My husbnd wants to get a divorce to go and find himself. Says he doesnt want to try anymore and that he just wants to go. He says he still loves me though...He says he wants to stay friends.. now I am a strong christian woman and Im at a loss on this one. Is it smart to try to be friends or just cut all ties now. At moments I fel as though we could stay friends and at other times I fell It may just tear me apart... Any thoughts??? Thank you god bless

Reply:I would say if it is still fresh maybe cutting him out for now would be the best thing for you. I just recently went through the same thing. Four kids and eleven years later he decides he wants to "Find Himself" so I said fine I just dont want to see u until Im ready. I know it tears u apart but the thing is having him around is beneficial for him because he gets his freedom and you as well. He wants what he wants now focus on what you want. I know u may think u want him but why settle for less than what your worth. Thats how I personally look at it. I Have my kids which keeps me grounded but sometimes I find it a trying experience especially when they cry for their father at night. I just get angry and focus on making him regret what he threw away it helps to ease the pain. Then I focus on all the things I gave up in order to cater to him and focus on accomplishing them. Focus on things that u couldnt do and fill your days at first just so u dont think about it. The pain does lessen and u will get stronger just dont become bitter. You need to build yourself up again so trust in god he wouldnt ever give u a trial u couldnt overcome and I shall pray for u....God Bless

Its different to stay on talking terms (not even friends) just get along for children sakes, but to actually stay friends after he hurts you it will tear you apart. Best bet is to let him go cut the ties. If you do have children then stay sociable for the children, but how could you possibly be actual friends? It would never work just keep hurting you.

If he calls you, I see no reason as to not talk to him and be friendly. I wouldn't spend an extensive amount of time with him talking but a little chat won't hurt. Then I would get off the phone with him saying you had to go because you have plans. I wouldn't give him too many details on this though. Start your own life and focus on it to keep the tears away. You can always do more for your church. And that kind of help will make you feel value inside of you too. Then you never know maybe he will realize how much he misses you. Or maybe he really needs to move on too. And don't forget...church is also a great place to meet another great guy to spend your time with.

Where to find moderately priced souvenirs for friends & family in Chicago?
I'll be staying at Hotel Monaco for a couple a days and want to pick up some nice souvenirs for my friends and family. Not really sure what I want to get them yet. I'm very open to suggestions of places to look. I have a feeling there are better places than the overpriced museums to find neat items.

Go to the Chicago Cultural Center located directly across the street from Millenium Park. There's a small shop inside that sells "authentic" Chicago stuff, not just a bunch of crappy T-shirts or sweatshirts that just say "Chicago" on them, which are churned out by the millions. This story has cool real Chicago items that are either used by Chicagoans or are authentic parts of the city. There are authentic Chicago police and fire department t-shirt, pins made out of the old bus and train tokens, books about specific neighborhoods in the city, things made only in Chicago (like Frango mints), or things that are made by people who live in the city. It's not the usually tourist souvenier crap like a shot glass with a picture of the Sears Tower. These are REAL Chicago things.
Or you can go to local stores on a street like Belmont and Clark. The shops there don't sell stuff with "Chicago" plastered on them, but they all sell stuff that is unique, and the fact that it actually COMES from Chicago should be good enough. Where to find pictures to send my friends?
here's the deal. some of my friends are always fowarding me funny pictures(like an animated dancing banana), or pictures of gross stuff, and even on occasion i have been sent perverted stuff to my cell phone. I'm not talking about one's that they took with thier camera phones. they are .gif files not .jpeg i've asked them where this crud comes from but it was usually fowarded to them from someone that fowarded to them and so on.... we can't seem to figure out where they actually originate so that we can find them on our own to start sending. Does anyone know how to do this? Are the pictures you find on the internet and send to your phone? if so how do you do it? or is there a way to get them from your phone like using media net? Anyway help me out.

Some people value their privacy, and SL gives them the opportunity to remain so while socialising. If they have some RL information on their profile, that would be a way, but the trick is to find the profile in the first place.
However, it is perfectly fine if you determine their identities on-line from them, either directly or indirectly, meaning that they either can tell you outright or have it listed somewhere (such as a MySpace or Facebook page). Again, this depends on whether or not they have their SL identities listed in this way.
If I were in your position, I might consider an indirect approach. Perhaps you can "demonstrate" curiousity about Second Life and ask your friends about their experiences. Contact your old HS and get the information for the Alumni Association for your class year. My HS I graduated from almost 40 yrs ago was able to provide this info for me.
The sites on the computer will make you pay to get any info. Don't waste your money on them.

At the InfoSpace home page, click on White Pages then you can key in the last name, first name, city and state to start your search for someone in the USA. Join an environmental group. My 8 year old is in a young naturalist club. We get along with all of the parents. I have met great friends in environmental studies classes and in a mediation group and in a community garden.
