Do you come to GWS to make friends? Or to find out how the opposition thinks? Or to justify your own beliefs?
Do you come to GWS to make friends? Or to find out how the opposition thinks? Or to justify your own beliefs?
Goody! I get to answer my own question. Ironic, no?
I did come here to learn, but I only find erudite rhetoric. I have enough friends at home, I don't need warm fuzzies in here. I do tend to be provacative, but ya' know what? People are more honest when they are riled. I have seen that my questions inspire more questions. I hope people are inspired to think. I really do.
Reply:I have always been interested in banality and you never fail to deliver.
Reply:I don't come often but when I do its to work out what I think - revise my opinions looking at answers. I did womens studies at uni long time ago have been out of circulation a long time trying to catch up with modern thought about issue s and find out where I stand now.
Reply:I come here because I'm either:
1. Bored
2. Procrastinating
3. Have nothing to do at the moment
If I happen to make friends in the process, cool. I do enjoy learning how others think (prior to coming here I honestly did not think there were true "women-haters" in the world, I thought they died with the Plague). I don't really want to justify my own beliefs, I believe what I believe. If others don't, that's ok :)
Reply:I come to explore different viewpoints. When listening to two opposing viewpoints, one can find the balance between the two. Both sides have offered insights. Some with which I agree, some with which I disagree.
I say both, but there's more than two. There's the two extremes, and many variables in between. I like to look at every situation from all sides.
Reply:I wouldn't say I come to make friends, I want to hear what everyone thinks. I am tired of being accused of being mysoginistic, evil, just plain wrong. How boring would it be if everyone agreed.
Reply:I just come here because it's funny, I have made a couple of friends though.
Reply:I initially came to hear what people have to say, both sides, and those in the middle. I also used to go in the Israel section for the same reason - to see what the problem is, see if there is any solution anywhere in sight. I ended up making some friends, and that was, a good thing.
Being a big fan of Descartes, I question my beliefs every day. There are some things I no longer question since I questioned them to death already. For instance, I learned that if I want to understand what the "other" side is trying to say, I need to put my self in that person's shoes. I also learned that if I want something, I have a better chance of getting it by asking nicely.
I really see no opposition these days. I am in the middle, neutral like Norway. The only people I refuse to talk to are those who are dead inside. I am just not shrink enough to understand what their problem is, so I leave that alone.
Reply:None of the above.
This is NOT a social site; people who want to socialize or make friends should go somewhere more appropriate.
I like the Social Science category, so it's one of the ones I come to on this site.
In general, when I answer questions in this category, it's to express my opinion, or share what I know or think. I usually try to back up what I say.
I come to YA because I enjoy answering questions; this is one of the categories I come to.
Reply:I am dedicated to wooing Object of Its Ire. You could probably tell this pretty easily, right?
Reply:i come for dejavu
Reply:A little of all three, and then add some more, such as
"Show there's another side to the story";
"Add balance to an otherwise completely out-of-balance debate dominated by Feminist opinions";
"Provide a rational, reasoned, civil, evidence-based objective counter-point to the foul-mouthed subjective opinionated verbal abuse that passes for Feminist 'fact' ";
"Show the Feminists - and everyone else - the Feminists haven't got it right at any point";
"Provide an example of calm debate as a refuge against the Feminists' shrill bullying."
So, I'd have to answer "all of the above".
Reply:To engage in intelligent discussion and to see a diversity o opinions. Sometimes these things actually occur, but less often than I would like.
I am thinking that Yahoo should start another forum called "Yahoo Acrimony" - YA II - so that this forum can be re-dedicated to actual questions and proposed answers instead of what it so often is.
Reply:Nah - but I do like the people in here. Many have grown on me. And you know, even the people that kind of hack me off sometimes have a point.
I try not to take things so seriously here, but I am passionate about certain issues (rape).
Reply:Make friends? No.
Find out what the other person thinks? Yes; it doesn't mean I'm going to agree; having said this one cannot not disagree that there are many parts to this forum that are quite educational and enlightening. What I mean is back in high school I always avoided the debate teams and now I find out that I like it. You know that we each have something to say and we should say it because it's just as important as what the other guy has to say. When I say educational a person needs back up, so you find yourself doing some research.
Justify my own beliefs? Yes, so what I do is sit back and watch them all bicker back and forth.
